What is the ICONS Project?
Based at the University of Maryland, the ICONS Project (founded as the International Communication and Negotiation Simulations Project) has over 30 years of experience designing and delivering educational role-play simulations. Our interactive online simulations cast participants in the roles of decision-makers tasked with resolving contentious issues. ICONS simulations have been used by academic institutions in over 50 countries around the world. In addition to our work with educators, we offer a number of simulation-related services for researchers, policy-makers, and executives in the public and private sectors.
What types of simulations does ICONS offer for educators?
From crisis situations to long-term negotiations, ICONS offers online role-play simulations on a wide range of topics relevant to courses in political science, business, geography, communication, and more. Visit our catalog for a complete list of simulation topics. In addition to our catalog of simulations, we also provide custom simulation development services for clients seeking a tailor-made exercise.
How would an ICONS simulation enrich my class or program?
ICONS role-play simulations engage students in confronting issues relevant to a variety of courses. When grappling with these issues from new perspectives, students gain greater understanding of the complexity of the challenges facing leaders today and throughout history. Visit our Why Simulations page to learn more about the ways simulations support student learning.
What skills will my students gain from participating in an ICONS simulation?
As students participate in ICONS simulations with classmates (or with other peers throughout the world) they develop the communication, negotiation, and critical thinking skills needed to become future global leaders and more engaged citizens. Learn more about the benefits of using ICONS simulations.
How does an ICONS simulation fit into my syllabus and class structure?
ICONS simulations are very flexible. Most simulations can run in just a few hours or class periods. Visit our Selecting a Simulation page for a guide to choosing the right simulation for your course.
How much does an ICONS simulation cost?
Please visit our Pricing page for information on education simulation costs and payment options.
How do I purchase a simulation for my class?
To use a simulation with your class, please complete an online registration. Visit our Get Started page for more information about bringing ICONS to your classroom!
Can I try out a simulation before purchasing it?
We offer free scenario excerpts prior to purchase. A scenario excerpt includes a few paragraphs from the simulation scenario and a portion of a private role sheet (if applicable). Educators can request excerpts via the Simulation Catalog. In addition, the ICONS staff schedules demos with interested instructors to provide a more in-depth overview of any of our simulations. Please contact our team to schedule a demo.
What resources are available to me as I help my students conduct an ICONS simulation?
Each simulation comes with online access to a Faculty Area complete with a facilitator guide and other teaching resources all designed to assist you throughout the preparation, online negotiation, and debriefing phases of the simulation.
Can ICONS help me develop a simulation regarding a topic that is not represented in the current offerings?
Yes! We offer custom simulation development services for educators with specific needs and learning objectives. Visit our Custom Simulations page for more information.
