Participant Resources: Opening Statement Guidelines

A country-team's opening statement is the first official contact that that country has with the other teams in the simulation.  An opening statement is not the same thing as a position paper, which is a private document.  Although your negotiation strategy determines how much information you wish to include in your opening statement, a good opening statement should contain the following:

  1. A greeting to the other simulation participants;

  2. A statement of your public negotiation goals;

  3. A brief overview of any proposals that you are planning on making to address the international problem.

The simulation really begins once opening messages have been exchanged, and countries begin to communicate with each other about their statements or proposals.
