Posting means...

...uploading material to a "host" computer of some type (e.g., a webserver) so as to make it available, for viewing or downloading, on students' own personal computers.

   Why Post Course Materials Online?

Posting assignments, lecture notes, and a syllabus online enables easy access to information about a course. All such material can be easily and quickly updated and disseminated to reflect changes in course requirements, outlines, and lectures. These files can be viewed online or downloaded to personal computers, freeing students and instructors from the need to meet with one another for such routine matters.

How to Post Course Materials Online:

There are many methods of posting materials online, some more complicated or requiring greater computer competancy than others. Some instructors may use a file transfer program (ftp) to upload files to a specific directory on a specific server. Others might use course management software, either Web-based or client-based, to achieve the same result without knowing the underlying structure of the directories and files.

Moreover, when posting materials online instructors will need to think about how the files are to be viewed or retrieved by students. For instance, if material is to be accessed via the Web, it will often have to be converted into an HTML (HyperText Mark Up) file.
