What is the ICONS Project?
The mission of the ICONS Project, based at the University of Maryland, is to advance learning by designing and delivering dynamic role-play simulations for students and professionals worldwide. ICONS online simulations cast participants in the roles of decision-makers tasked with trying to resolve contentious, complex issues.

How can ICONS simulations enrich my class or program?
ICONS higher education role-play simulations engage students in confronting issues relevant to a variety of courses. When grappling with these issues from new perspectives, students gain greater understanding of the complexity of the challenges facing leaders today and throughout history. As students participate in ICONS simulations with classmates (or other peers throughout the world) they develop the communication, negotiation, and critical thinking skills needed to become future global leaders and more engaged citizens.

What types of simulations does ICONS offer?
Instructors may choose to involve their students in ICONS-run distributed simulations, which involve students from across the country and around the world, or in single-class simulations, in which participants from just one class or school take on the roles of a range of actors relevant to the issues under discussion. Visit our catalog for a complete list of simulation topics.

How long do simulations last?
Single-class simulations can be scheduled for any length of time throughout the year (from a few hours to a few weeks) depending on the needs of the instructor and the specific simulation. The International System, our distributed simulation, lasts for three weeks and is scheduled for specific times during the fall or spring semesters.

Do I need to download software to use ICONS simulations?
No. The simulations use a Web-based application called ICONSnet. Each student is given an individual login to enter the simulation. ICONSnet can be used anywhere with Internet access, allowing instructors flexibility to run simulations outside of regular class hours.

What instructional resources are available with ICONS simulations?
Each simulation comes with online access to a facilitator guide, research library, and other teaching resources all designed to assist instructors throughout the preparation, online negotiation, and debriefing phases of the simulation.

How do I order an ICONS simulation?
To order a simulation, register through our online registration system. To see a list of all available simulations prior to registration, please visit our catalog or contact us at (301) 405-4172 or icons@gvpt.umd.edu.
