In this chapter, key terms for buttons and checkboxes
are defined. Also provided are links to the appropriate chapter in the ICONSnet
Tutorial.
Administrative: This is the button that gives users access to user administrative functions, such as changing passwords and deleting messages. Please see Administrative Features. Archive: After reading a new message, users can choose to Keep New, Archive, or Archive as Favorite. Selecting Archive puts the message into the general message archives. It will no longer be retrievable as a new message. Please see Reading New Messages. Archive as Favorite: After reading a new message, users can choose to Keep New, Archive, or Archive as Favorite. A favorite message is a message that a user thinks the team might need to refer back to often. Selecting Archive as Favorite puts the message into the general message archives, and also makes it available through the Read Favorites function. It will no longer be retrievable as a new message. Please see Reading New Messages. Checking a Response: (Conference function) If a user responds to a message sent by another user, the original message is provided as a hypertext link in the response. Other conference participants can then click on the link to read the message being responded to. Please see Conferencing. Enter Conference: Click this button to attend a conference. You will be given a list of all upcoming conferences. Select which conference you would like to enter. Conferences open 10 minutes before the posted start time, and the Enter Conference button does not appear until that time. Please see Conferencing. Exit Simulation: To exit the simulation, click this button or close your web browser. It is important to exit the simulation properly so that no one using the computer after you can access your messages. Please see Exiting and Security Issues. Favorite Message: A Favorite message is one that a user thinks the team might need to refer back to often. Messages marked as Favorite can be accessed quickly and easily from the Search Archives screen. Please see Reading New Messages Issues: The information about a message which is one of a pre-determined group of simulation topics set prior to the simulation. Users may not add additional issues. The number of issues is limited to facilitate categorization and searching the archives. Please see Reading New Messages Last Activity: (Conference function) A list of conference participants, along with information on when they last read and sent messages. Please see Conferencing. Leave Conference: (Conference function): To leave a conference, click this button. At this point, you can either Exit the Simulation or Read or Send Messages. Please see Conferencing. New Conference Messages: (Conference function) The conference software will deliver new messages any time that a user performs a function, but will not deliver messages while the user is reading messages or waiting. Click on the New Messages button to retrieve all new messages sent since the last time you checked. Please see Conferencing. Passwords: The security protection attached to a participant's user name. The original password is assigned by ICONS, but users can change their own passwords. Please see Administrative Features. Private Comment: (Conference function) The button you click when you want to send a message to one or several of the conference participants, whom you identify individually. Please see Conferencing. Private Response: (Conference function) The button you click when you want to respond to a particular private comment during a conference. When the other participants receive your response, they will be able to click on a link in your message to get the original message. A Private Response is available only when you are replying to a private comment. Please see Conferencing. Public Comment: (Conference function) The button you click when you want to make a statement to all conference participants. Please see Conferencing. Public Response: (Conference function) The button you click when you want to respond to a particular public comment during a conference. When the other participants receive your response, they will be able to click on a link in your message to get the original message. A Public Response is available only when you are responding to a public comment made during a conference. Please see Conferencing. Quit Reading Messages: A button provided at the end of every new message returned to the user. Clicking this button records the messages that have been Archived and Archived as Favorites, and takes the user back to the ICONSnet function buttons. Please see Reading New Messages Read Favorites: A button accessed on the Search Archives screen. Clicking this will pull up all of the messages that you (or your team) have designated as favorite messages. Please see Searching the Archives. Read New Messages: Click this button to read your new messages. Then, you can choose either to read all new messages, read messages by issue area, or read selected new messages. Please see Reading New Messages Respond to Message #: When you are reading new messages, if you click this button, you will be given a Send Message form addressed to the sender of the original message, with the same issue and subject as the original message. Please see Reading New Messages. Secure Server: ICONSnet runs on a secure server, which means that all transactions between your computer and the ICONSnet server are encrypted. This ensures that all input you send to the ICONSnet server will be private. For information about logging in using a secure server, see Logging In. Search Archives: Click this button to search for all messages which have been put in the general simulation archives. Please see Searching the Archives. Search Conference Archives: Click this button to search for conference messages after a conference has closed. Please see Conferencing. Send Message: The function that allows users to compose and send a message to the other simulation participants. Please see Sending Messages. Subject: Information about the message defined by the sender of a message. This is a way of providing more information about what the message contains than is available by specifying the issue. Please see Reading New Messages User Name: The name of the registered ICONS simulation participant. This is assigned by ICONS. Please see Logging In. User Profile: The choices that you and your team make about whether to copy messages you send to "self" and whether to have Archive or Keep New as your default when reading new messages. See Administrative Features.
