Simulations
Project ICONS is offering the opportunity for universities throughout the world to participate in foreign policy simulation exercises over the Internet during the Fall 2002 and Spring 2003 semesters. In addition to our traditional offerings, we have another option for instructors to schedule a single-classroom simulation.

ICONS will conduct the following simulations during the 2002-2003 academic year:

Title Dates Cost
The International System October 21 - November 22, 2002

March 31 - May 2, 2003

$600 for one team,
$300 each additional team
Managing European Security

(Formerly: Managing International Security: The New Europe)

November 4 - November 22, 2002

$400 for one team,
$200 for each additional team
International Relations of the Americas March 24 - April 11, 2003 $400 for one team,
$200 for each additional team
International Relations of Africa March 24 - April 11, 2003 $400 for one team,
$200 for each additional team

The International System
ICONS' traditional five-week offering, this simulation will be global in scope and will focus on a variety of issues such as arms control, human rights, international trade, Third World economic development, the global environment, international drug trafficking, and world health.  Appropriate for general international relations classes, foreign policy classes, and comparative politics classes.

Managing European Security
This three-week, regional simulation casts students as negotiators for European states (east, central, west) involved in the on-going effort of redefining the regional security agenda. The scenario will focus on the need to define institutional channels appropriate to both traditional security issues (nuclear proliferation, arms control, territorial integrity) and the "new" security challenges (ethnic conflict, natural resource competition, demographic instability). Appropriate for courses on European politics, international negotiation, and international security.

International Relations of the Americas
The focus of this three-week, regional simulation is the extent to which American nations will seek progress on important issues such as economic integration, environmental degradation, and narco-diplomacy on a hemispheric basis, thereby cementing the Americas as a key bloc in the international system.  Appropriate for courses in politics of the Americas, environmental or natural resources politics, international economics, and international negotiation.

International Relations of Africa
In this three-week, regional simulation student diplomats will engage in a dialogue centered on three issues of importance to the future of the region: conflict (prevention and resolution), economics (growth and integration), and public health (infectious diseases and resource contamination).  Appropriate for courses on African politics, environmental or natural resources politics, international economics, conflict management, and international negotiation.

You can find more information about the topics to be negotiated and the structure of each simulation by looking at recent simulation scenarios in the ICONS Scenario Archives.

Single-Classroom Simulation: International Whaling Commission
Our newest ICONS simulation, the International Whaling Commission (IWC), is a negotiation process exercise that supports courses wholly of primarily focussed on environmental politics. A scenario, background, and other materials are provided so that you can run the exercise quickly, with minimal need for external research. The IWC is designed to be run with students from a single class. The simulation's flexible structure allows you to schedule it at any point in semester. [Details. . .]

The fee for the IWC simulation is $150. This includes simulation materials (including a scenario), access to a simulation community for up to 3 weeks, and technical support. Instructors will be responsible for managing the simulation themselves.

ICONSnet SOFTWARE
ICONS' simulations are conducted over the ICONSnet Web-based communications system. All that is required to access the system is a computer with a connection to the Internet and a Web browser.  Please contact
ICONS if you have any questions or concerns about your current or expected computer equipment or access.

REGISTRATION
Sign up for any of our simulations by using our on-line registration form.

You must register at least six weeks before the start of the simulation. The earlier you register, the more likely you are to be assigned your country-team preferences.

If you have any questions regarding registration or the simulations themselves, please contact Tim Wedig at (301) 405-4172, by fax at (301) 314-9690, or by e-mail at icons@gvpt.umd.edu.

Similarly, if you would like to be added to the ICONS mailing list to receive notice of upcoming simulations, please send Tim an e-mail message specifying your name, institution, postal address, phone number, and e-mail address.
