Simulations
Project ICONS is offering the opportunity for high schools from around the world to participate in Internet-based foreign policy negotiation simulation exercises in 2002-2003. In addition to our traditional offerings, we have another option for instructors to schedule a single-classroom simulation.

ICONS will conduct the following simulations during the 2002-2003 academic year:

Title Dates Cost
Fall International System

November 11 - December 13, 2002*

$600 for one team, $300 each additional team
Spring International Relations of the Americas March 10 - March 28, 2003 $400 for one team, $200 each additional team
Spring International System I March 24 - April 18, 2003
$600 for one team, $300 each additional team
Spring International System II April 21 - May 16, 2003 $600 for one team, $300 each additional team

*This will be a 4 week simulation beginning on November 11, but there will be no simulation activity scheduled for the week of November 25 - 29 due to the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. Therefore, the simulation will conclude December 13.

** Simulations will proceed provided that a sufficient number of participants have registered approximately one month prior to each simulation's scheduled starting date.

International System Simulation
A four-week simulation exercise, this simulation will be global in scope and will focus on 5 issues such as international security, human rights, international trade, Third World economic development, the global environment, and world health.

International Relations of the Americas
Students will assume the role of diplomats from the countries located in North America, Central America and South America. They must decide how to progress on issues such as economic integration, environmental degradation and narco-diplomacy.

Single-Classroom Simulation: International Whaling Commission
Our newest ICONS simulation, the International Whaling Commission (IWC), is a negotiation process exercise that supports courses wholly of primarily focussed on environmental politics. A scenario, background, and other materials are provided so that you can run the exercise quickly, with minimal need for external research. The IWC is designed to be run with students from a single class. The simulation's flexible structure allows you to schedule it at any point in semester. [Details. . .]

The fee for the IWC simulation is $150. This includes simulation materials (including a scenario), access to a simulation community for up to 3 weeks, and technical support. Instructors will be responsible for managing the simulation themselves.

ICONSnet SOFTWARE
ICONS' simulations are conducted over the ICONSnet Web-based communications system. All that is required to access the system is a computer with a connection to the Internet and a Web browser.  Please contact ICONS if you have any questions or concerns about your current or expected computer equipment or access.

REGISTRATION
Sign up for any of our simulations by using our on-line registration form.

You must register at least six weeks before the start of the simulation. The earlier you register, the more likely you are to be assigned your country-team preferences.

If you have any questions regarding registration or the simulations themselves, please contact Tim Wedig at (301) 405-4172, by fax at (301) 314-9690, or by e-mail at icons@gvpt.umd.edu.

Similarly, if you would like to be added to the ICONS mailing list to receive notice of upcoming simulations, please send Tim an e-mail message specifying your name, institution, postal address, phone number, and e-mail address.

Note:  Although the use of the Internet is free, the management of the technical and substantive aspects ICONS simulations (developing scenarios, monitoring messages, maintaining software and servers) requires considerable staff effort. While we do receive funding from the University of Maryland and the State of Maryland, it is insufficient to cover all of our costs.
